Rava / Sooji / Semolina Idli | ரவா இட்லி - Homemade Rava Idly


Rava Idli



Ingredients :

Rava Idli Ingredients

Sooji (Rava) - 1 cup
Curd - 2 cup
Cooking Soda - pinch
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Bengal Gram / Kadalai paruppu) - 1 tsp
Skinless Black Gram / Urad dal - 1 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Green Chili - 1 no (finely chopped)
Ginger - 1 tsp (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves - 1 stk (chopped)
Cashew-nut - 10 no (broken)
Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp (chopped) 
Ghee - 1 tbsp
Salt to Taste.

Method :


Steps To Make Rava / Sooji Idli :
  • Temper the mustard seeds in hot ghee, after splutter, add bengal gram and urad dal, saute until light brown colour.
  • Add asafoetida, green chili, ginger, cashew-nuts, coriander leaves and curry leaves, saute for few seconds.
  • Add rava and roast until light brown colour, remove from flame and allow to cool completely.


  • To make batter, combine roasted rava mixture with curd, cooking soda and required salt, mix well in a idli batter consistency. Soak for half an hour.
  • Greese the idli molds with ghee, pour the batter, steam for 10 to 15min and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Mint Chutney and Coconut Chutney.
