Ven Pongal | வெண்-பொங்கல் - Pressure Cooker Method


Ven Pongal


Ingredients :

Ven Pongal

Raw Rice / Pachai Rice / Ponni Rice - 3/4 cup (washed, soaked for 1/2 an hour)
Green Gram / Moong Dal / Paasi Paruppu - 1/4 cup
Ginger - 1 tsp (finely chopped)
Cashew-nuts - 20 no (ghee roasted)
Water - 2 and 1/2 cup
Salt to taste.

To Temper :

Black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Ghee - 2 tsp.

Method :


Steps To Make Ven Pongal :
  • In a pressure cooker pan, boil water, add raw rice and moong dal, cook for 1 whistle and 3 to 5min in simmer.
  • Meantime temper cumin Seeds, black Pepper, ginger, asafoetida and curry Leaves in hot ghee, add one by one, stir well and keep aside.


  • When all the steam has escaped, open pressure cooker pan.
  • Add ghee-roasted cashew-nuts and tempered ingredients, mix well and ready to serve.


Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Vadai, Coconut Chutney and Sambar.
