Country Chicken Dry Gravy / Nattu Kozhi Vathakkal


Ingredients :

Country Chicken Dry Gravy / Nattu Kozhi Vathakkal

Country Chicken / Nattu Kozhi - 500 gm (chopped)
Shallots - 20 no (chopped)
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Cinnamon Sticks - 2 no (2" long)
Cloves - 5 no
Cardamom - 3 pods
Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp (chopped)
Water - 1 cup
Oil - 3 tbsp
Salt to taste.

To Roast and Grind into Paste :

Dry Red Chili - 8 nos
Black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
Poppy Seeds - 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Coconut - 2 tbsp

Method :

Steps To Make Masala Paste : (shown in above image)
  • Dry roast the mentioned ingredients separately and allow it to cool completely.
  • Grind roasted ingredients into powder except coconut, then add coconut and grind into fine paste with required water and keep aside.

Steps To Make Country Chicken Vathakkal :
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker pan, roast cloves, cinnamon stick and cardamom, add shallots and saute for an minute.
  • Add country chicken pieces and turmeric powder, saute until the chicken moisture reduced completely.
  • Then add ground paste and required salt, saute for an minute.

  • Pour the water, mix well and bring to boil.
  • Cover the lid and cook for 1 whistle and 15min in simmer.
  • When all the steam has escaped, open the pressure cooker pan, mix well and cook again til the water reduced, in a dry consistency and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Chapathi or White Rice
