Simple Onion Sambar / Vengaya Sambar - South Indian Style


Simple Onion Sambar

Ingredients :

Simple Onion Sambar

Small Onion - 100 gm (1/2 cup)
Tomato - 3 nos
Green Chili - 2 nos
Red Chili Powder - 3/4 tsp
Coriander Powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida -1/4 tsp
Tamarind Water - 1 cup (1" ball size)
Toor Dal / Green Gram (skinless) - 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek - 1/4 tsp
Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp (chopped)
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Water - 2 cup
Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt to taste.

Method :

Simple Onion Sambar

  • First Pressure Cook Toor Dal with Turmeric Powder and Asafoetida for 1 whistle and 5mins in simmer.
  • When all the steam has escaped, open Pressure Cooker and Keep aside.

Simple Onion Sambar

  • Heat Oil in a Kadai, first to temper, add Mustard Seeds, Urad Dal and Fenugreek, after splutter add Onion and Curry Leaves, saute until brown colour.
  • Add Tomato and Green Chili, saute until smash well.
  • Now add Red Chili Powder, Coriander Powder and required Salt, saute until raw smell leaves.

Simple Onion Sambar

  • Add Tamarind Water and Water, bring to boil and cook for 5mins until raw smell leaves.
  • Now cooked Toor Dal, stir well and cook for 1minute.
  • Finally add Coriander, stir well and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with White Rice or Idly or Dosa.
