Manathakkali Keerai Kootu | மணத்தக்காளி கீரை கூட்டு | Black Nightshade Greens Kootu


Ingredients :

Manathakkali Keerai Kootu | மணத்தக்காளி கீரை கூட்டு | Black Nightshade Greens Kootu

Manathakkali Keerai / Black Nightshade Greens - 1 bunch (cleaned, washed, chopped)
Paasi Paruppu / Green Gram (skinless, split) - 3 tbsp
Coconut Paste - 2 tbsp
Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds Powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Water - 2 and 1/2 cup
Salt to Taste.

To Temper :

Onion - 1 no (chopped)
Garlic - 3 nos (crushed)
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Dry Red Chili - 2 nos
Ghee - 1 tbsp 

Method :

Steps To Make Manathakkali Keerai Kootu :
  • In a cooking utensil, add paasi paruppu / green gram with turmeric powder and a cup of water, cook for about 10mins over simmer, until the dal cooks fully.
  • Add coconut paste, red chili powder and cumin seeds powder, saute for an minute.
  • Add manathakkali keerai / black nightshade greens and mix well.
  • Pour 1 and 1/2 cup of water (or 2nd rinsed rice water), mix well, bring to boil and cook for 5mins over simmer.

  • Meanwhile, temper the mustard seeds, urad dal and dry red chili, after splutter add onion and garlic, saute til the onion becomes light golden brown colour.
  • Then add tempered onion into greens-dal mixture, mix well and cook for an minute and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve with Crispy Potato Fry or Crispy Taro Fry.
