Simple Avarakkai Kootu | அவரைக்காய் கூட்டு | Hyacinth Beans Kootu



Ingredients :

Simple Avarakkai Kootu | அவரைக்காய் கூட்டு | Hyacinth Beans Kootu

Avarakkai / Hyacinth Beans - 150 gm (
Pasi Paruppu / Green Gram- 1/4 cup
Onion - 1/2 no (chopped)
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves - 1 stk
Oil - 2 tsp + 2 tsp
Water - 1 cup + 1 cup
Salt to Taste.

To Grind Into Paste :

Coconut - 2 tbsp (chopped)
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry Red Chili - 2 no

Method :

Steps To Make Avarakkai Kootu :
  • Heat two teaspoon of oil in a pressure cooker pan, roast the pasi paruppu for about half a minute or until the aroma rise. (Image 1 and 2)
  • Pour a cup of water and add turmeric powder, cook for 1 whistle and 3 mins in simmer.
  • When all the steam has escaped, open the pressure cooker pan and keep aside.

  • Meantime, grind the mentioned ingredients into paste with required water and keep aside. (Image 5 and 6)
  • Also temper the mustard seeds and urad dal in hot oil in a kadai / frying pan. (Image 7)
  • After splutter add onion and curry leaves, saute til the onion becomes light brown colour and keep aside. (Image 8)

  • Then add ground paste, avarakkai, water (1 cup) and required salt into the pressure cooked dal and mix well. (Image 9)
  • Also add sauteed onion and mix well.
  • Again cook for 1 whistle and 1 minute in simmer.
  • When all the steam has escaped, open the pressure cooker pan, mix well and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Pappad and Crispy Taro Fry.
