Ingredients :

For Vazhai Poo Kola Urundai | Plantain Flower Balls


Vazhai Poo - 1 cup (chopped)
Bengal Gram - 1/3 cup (soaked 1 hour, drained)
Toor Dal - 1/3 cup (soaked 1 hour, drained)
Shallots - 1/3 cup (chopped)
Green Chili - 1 no (finely chopped)
Ginger - 1 " (chopped)
Garlic - 7 cloves (chopped)
Fennel Seeds - 1 tsp
Cinnamon Stick - 2" long
Cloves - 2 no
Coconut - 1/4 cup (scrapped)
Coriander Leaves - 1/8 cup (chopped)
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Oil for deep fry
Salt to Taste.

For The Coconut Milk Curry :


1st Extract Coconut Milk - 1/2 cup
2nd Extract Coconut Milk - 1 and 1/2 cup
Shallots - 1/2 cup (chopped)
Tomato - 1 no (chopped)
Garlic - 10 cloves
Green Chili - 2 no (chopped)
Cinnamon Stick - 2" long
Cloves - 3 nos
Star Anise - 1 no
Red Chili Powder - 1 and 1/2 tsp
Coriander Seeds Powder - 1 and 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Water - 1 cup
Oil - 2 tbsp
Salt to Taste.

Steps To Make The Vazhai Poo \ Plantain Flower Kola Urundai : (Images 1 to 6)

  • First grind the bengal gram, toor dal, green chili and required salt coarsely. (Image 1 and 2)
  • Add in the remaining ingredients and again grind coarsely for few seconds. (Image 3 and 4)
  • Make small balls of the vazhai poo \ plantain flower mixture. (Image 5)
  • Then deep fry in the hot oil till golden brown and keep aside. (Image 6)

Steps To Make The Curry : (Images 7 to14)

  • Heat oil in a utensil, roast the cinnamon stick, cloves and star anise. Then add in the shallots, garlic and curry leaves, saute till light brown colour. (Image 1)
  • Add in the tomato and green chili, saute till the tomato becomes tender. (Image 8)
  • Add in the red chili powder, coriander seeds powder, turmeric powder and required salt, mix well and saute for half an minute or till the raw smell leaves completely. (Image 9)
  • Pour the 2nd extracted coconut milk, mix all and bring to boil. (Image 10)

  • Then cook for 10minutes over simmer. (Image 12)
  • Pour the 1st extracted coconut milk and cook for few seconds. (Image 12)
  • Add the coriander leaves, mix well and remove from the flame. (Image 13)
  • Add the fried vazhai poo kola urundai \ plantain flower balls. Allow to stand for 10minutes to observe the curry and serve. (Image 14)
