Murungakkai Kootu \ Drumstick Kootu recipe made with the pasi paruppu \ moong dal and simple ingredients in a easy pressure cooking method - South Indian Cuisine.

Ingredients :

Drumstick \ Murungakkai - 2 no (3" long)
Coconut - 1/4 cup (chopped)
Green Chilli - 2 no
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Shallots \ Sambar Onion - 1/2 cup (chopped)
Garlic - 5 cloves
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Tomato - 2 no (chopped)
Moong Dal \ Pasi Paruppu - 1/3 cup (soaked half an hour)
Coriander Leaves - 3 tbsp (chopped)
Oil - 2 tbsp
Salt to Taste.

Method :

Steps To Make The Drumstick \ Murungakkai Kootu :

  • First grind the coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds into paste with required water and keep aside. (Image 1 and 2)
  • To make the kootu, heat oil in a pressure cooker pan and temper the mustard and urad dal, after splutter stir in the asafoetida. (Image 3)
  • Add in the shallots, garlic and curry leaves, saute and cook till the shallots turn light brown color. (Image 4)
  • Add in the tomato and cook till it turns soft. (Image 5)
  • Then stir in the drumstick for few seconds. (Image 6)
  • Then stir in the pasi paruppu \ moong dal. (Image 7)
  • Add in the ground coconut-mixture paste, two cups of water and required salt and mix well. Bring to boil and cook for 1 whistle and 2 to 3mins over simmer. When all the steam has released, open the pan and mix well. (Image 8 and 9)
  • Finally stir in the coriander leaves and ready to serve. (Image 10)
Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Crispy Sepang Kizhangu 1 or Crispy Sepang Kizhangu Fry 2.
