About The Recipe - Spicy Chicken Masala Stuffed Idlis \ Idlys :


Idly is a round and fluffy rice cake. It's made from the ground rice, mixed with the ground urad dal and fenugreek seeds. Then the mixture is allowed to ferment prior and steamed in a idli pan. Its our traditional breakfast, to make it more healthier, we can also use millet \ siru thaniyam like thinai | foxtail millet, samai \ little millet, varagu \ kodo, kelvaragu \ finger millet, kuthirai vali \ barnyard millet and kambu \ pearl millet instead of rice. Already i have posted thinai batter to make the idli and dosai.

Common idli varieties are sambar idli, rava idli, mini idli, fried idli, masala idli and many more. We can also make the idli in a more interesting and tasty with stuffing. So I have tried with the simple and spicy chicken masala stuffing, it came out perfectly. For vegetarians, just veg it by using paneer or any vegetables. You can follow my spicy chicken masala stuffed idlis recipe as below...

Ingredients :

Chicken - 250 gm (finely chopped)
Idli \ Idly Batter - 2 cup or required (thinai idli batter or usual arisi maavu idli batter)
Cloves - 3 no
Cinnamon Stick - 2 no (2" long)
Shallots \ Sambar Onion - 1/2 cup (finely chopped)
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
Tomato - 1 no (chopped, medium size)
Red Chilli Powder - 1 and 1/2 tsp
Roasted Fennel Seeds Powder - 1 tsp
Roasted Cumin Seeds Powder - 1 tsp
Pepper Powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Coriander Leaves - 3 tbsp (finely chopped)
Gingelly Oil - 3 tbsp
Salt to Taste.

Method :

Steps To Make The Chicken Masala For Stuffing :

  • Heat oil in a kadhai \ pan and roast the cloves, cinnamon stick and cardamom. (Image 1)
  • Add in the shallots and cook until light brown colour. (Image 2)
  • Stir in the ginger garlic paste till its raw smell leaves. (Image 3)
  • Add in the tomato and cook till tender. (Image 4)
  • Add in the chicken and cook until its moisture reduced. (Image 6)

  • Stir in the red chili powder, fennel seeds powder, cumin seeds powder, pepper powder and turmeric powder till its raw smell leaves. (Image 6)
  • Add a cup of water and required salt, mix well. (Image 7)
  • Cover and cook for about 10minutes (+ or -) (Image 8)
  • Finally stir in the coriander leaves, mix well and let it cool. And the chicken masala stuffing is ready. (Image 9)

Steps To Make the Chicken Masala Stuffed Idlis :

  • Heat 3cm of water in a idli pan or required water. (Image 10)
  • Meantime, grease one or two idli plates or use wet cloth. Spoon 2 tablespoon (+ or -) of batter into the round indentation, spoon 2 tablespoon of prepared chicken masala in the centre, then cover the chicken masala with required batter. (Image 11 and 12)
  • Arrange the idli plates in the pan. (Image 13)
  • Cover the lid and cook for 15minutes  (+ or - ) over medium flame. (Image 14)
  • To take the idli from the plate, drops little water around the each steamed idlis and take out the idli by using knife or large spatula. 
  • Or from the cloth, drops little water around the each steamed idlis, then invert on the plate and remove the cloth. (Image 16 and 17)
  • Add the idlis are ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve the chicken masala stuffed idlis with chicken curry.
