Vazhakkai | Raw Banana - 1 no |
Oil - 2 tbsp |
Sambar Onion - 1\2 cup |
Curry Leaves - 2 stk (finely chopped) |
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp |
Tomato - 1 no |
Asafoetida - 1\4 tsp |
Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp |
Cumin Seeds Powder - 1\2 tsp |
Fennel Seeds Powder - 1\2 tsp |
Pepper Powder - 1\2 tsp |
Turmeric Powder - 1\4 tsp |
Salt - as required |
Coriander Leaves - 2 stk (finely chopped) |
Method : |
Preparation, peel off the vazhakkai skin, cut into small pieces and immerse in the water to avoid discoloration. |
Heat two to three cups of water and some salt in a pan. Bring to boil and add the vazhakkai. Boil till the vazhakkai cooks 3\4 part it take . Drain the water completely and keep aside. |
To make the poriyal, heat the oil in a kadhai, add the onion and curry leaves, saute till the onion turns slightly golden colour. Add the ginger garlic and saute till its raw smell leaves. Add the tomato and cook till soft. Stir in the asafoetida. Add the red chili powder, cumin seeds powder, fennel seeds powder, pepper powder and turmeric powder, stir well altogether. Add quarter cup of water and required salt, mix well and bring to boil. Add the vazhakkai and mix well. Cook till the water reduced and dry. Finally add the coriander leaves, mix well and ready. |
Notes: Don't over cook the vazhakkai in the water else it will break and mashed easily. Also cook the vazhakkai in the salted water, so it can absorbs salt. |

Add the crushed ginger and garlic, saute till its raw smell leaves completely. Then add the tomato and cook till soft. In this stage, you can also add some salt to cook the tomato fast. |
Add the asafoetida first and mix well. After that the red chili powder, cumin seeds powder, fennel seeds powder, pepper powder and turmeric powder, stir well for few seconds. |
Add quarter cup of water and required salt (already some salt added to boil the vazhakkai). Mix well and bring to boil. Add the vazhakkai, mix well and cook. |
Cook till the water reduced and turns dry. Finally add the finely chopped coriander leaves, mix well and the vazhakkai poriyal is ready. |
