Palakaai - 1\2 no (approx 2 cups grated) |
Kadalai Paruppu | Bengal Gram - 1\4 cup |
Turmeric Powder - 1\2 tsp |
Oil - 2 to 3 tbsp |
Mustard Seeds - 1\4 tsp |
Urad Dal - 1\4 tsp |
Curry Leaves - 2 stk |
Dry Red Chili - 1 no |
Asafoetida - 1\4 tsp |
Sambar Onion - 1\2 cup (finely chopped) |
Green Chili - 2no (slit) |
Garlic - 5 cloves (crushed) |
Salt - as required |
Grated Coconut - 1\4 cup |
Coriander Leaves - 1 or 2 tbsp (finely chopped) |

Notes: Carefully remove the palakaai outer skin and center hard part by knife or any cutter. No need to immerse the grated palakaai in the water. Just mix with the turmeric powder and cook it. Always open the pressure cooker pan, only the steam released fully. |

First pressure cook the kadalai paruppu with one cup of water for one whistle and five minutes over simmer. When all the steam has released, open the pan and keep aside. Now lets see, how to clean and use palakaai, take the palakaai, slice into half. Using sharp knife or aruvamanai, remove the palakaai outer skin. Then remove the center hard pard, we need only its flush. Then grate the palakaai flush with large holes grater. (Don't need to immerse in the water to avoid discoloration.) |
Mix the grated palakaai with the turmeric powder and keep aside. To make the palakaai poriyal, heat the oil in a pressure cooker pan, add the mustard seeds and urad dal, temper them. |
After splutter, add the curry leaves, dry red chili and asafoetida, mix well altogether. Add the sambar onion and green chili, saute till the onion turns translucent. |
Add the crushed garlic and saute for an minute. Then the grated palakaai mixture and cook for an minute. |
Add the required salt and quarter cup of water, mix well altogether. |
Cover with the lid and pressure cook for one whistle. When all the steam has released, open the pan. Add the cooked kadalai parrupu and mix well. |
Add the grated coconut and mix well altogether. Finally add the coriander mix well and the palakaai puttu \ palakaai poriyal is ready. Serve hot. |
