Simple Snake Gourd Kootu | புடலங்காய் கூட்டு | Pudalangai Kootu


Ingredients :

Simple Snake Gourd Kootu | புடலங்காய் கூட்டு | Pudalangai Kootu

Snake Gourd / Pudalangai - 250 gm (scraped, deseeded, chopped)
Bengal Gram / Kadalai Paruppu - 1/4 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp 
Curry Leaves - 2 stk
Water - 1 and 1/2 cup
Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt to taste.

To Roast and Grind into Paste :

Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Green Chili - 4 nos
Coconut - 1 tbsp (chopped).

Method :

  • First Pressure Cook Bengal Gram / Kadalai Paruppu with Turmeric Powder, Asafoetida and 1 cup of Water for 1 whistle and 5mins in simmer.

  • In the meantime, roast mentioned Ingredients with 1 tsp of Oil, cool it and grind into fine paste with required Water and keep aside. (above image)

  • Now to make Kootu, Heat remaining Oil in a Pressure Cooker, temper Mustard Seeds, Urad Dal and Curry Leaves, after splutter add Snake Gourd and saute for an minute.
  • Add pressure cooked Bengal Gram / Kadalai Paruppu.
  • Add ground Paste, required Salt and Water, mix well.
  • Pressure cook for 1 whistle, when all the steam has escaped, open pressure cooker, mix well and ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Fried Egg or Crispy Taro Fry
