How to Clean / Use Plantain Flower / Vazhai Poo : (3 STEPS)

    STEP 1 : Take off the purple outer cover and remove the bunch of florets.

    STEP 2 : Take off the stamen from florets (shown in above image).


    STEP 3 : Chop the florets and put them in the butter milk or water to avoid discoloration.

Ingredients :

Plantain Flower Vada / Vazhai Poo Vadai Ingredients

Plantain Flower - 1 no (cleaned, chopped, washed)
Bengal Gram / Kadalai Paruppu / Channa Dal - 3/4 cup
Raw Rice - 2 tbsp
Onion - 1 no (chopped)
Green Chili - 2 no (chopped)
Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp (chopped)
Crushed Ginger - 1 tsp
Crushed Garlic - 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Curry Leaves - 1 stks
Oil for deep fry
Salt to taste.

Method :

  • Soak the kadalai paruppu (bengal gram / channa dal) and the rice for 2 - 3 hours and drain the excess water.


Steps To Make Plantain Flower Vadai :
  • Heat oil in a kadai / pan, add the florets (cleaned, chopped, washed) and saute til the water has reduced, cook in simmer.
  • Keep aside and allow to cool completely.


  • Grind coarsely soaked kadalai paruppu and rice with required salt. 
  • Then add fried florets and grind again little into coarsely paste.


  • In a bowl, combine ground florets paste with onion, green chili, coriander leaves, curry leaves, ginger, garlic and fennel seeds, mix well.
  • Make a small ball and pat it like a small circled patty (shown in above image) and keep aside.


  • Deep fry them in hot oil until golden brown colour on both sides in medium flame.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Coconut Chutney.
