Chayote / Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow Kootu

Ingredients :

Chayote / Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow Kootu

Chayote / Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow - 1 no (skin peel off, chopped)
Small Onion - 1/4 cup (chopped)
Green Gram - 1/4 cup (skinless, split)
Coconut - 2 tbsp
Curry Leaves - 1 stks
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Water - 1 and 1/2 cup
Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt to Taste

To Grind into Powder :

Dry Red Chili - 3 nos
Pepper - 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal - 2 tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp

Method :

Chayote / Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow Kootu

  • First roast Dry Red Chili, Urad Dal, Cumin Seeds and Pepper without Oil, Grind in to powder and keep aside.
  • Then Grind Coconut and keep aside.

Chayote / Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow Kootu

  • Now Heat Oil in a Pressure Cooker, first temper Mustard Seeds and Urad Dal, after splutter add Onion and Curry Leaves, saute until light golden colour.
  • Then add Bangalore Brinjal / Chow Chow and saute for an minute.
  • Add Green Gram, saute for an minute.
  • Then add Water and required Salt, cook for 1 whistle and 3Min's in simmer.

  • When all the steam has escaped, open Pressure Cooker.
  • Add Ground Masala and saute for an minute,
  • Finally add Coconut Shreds and again saute for an minute. Ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion : Serve hot with Papad and Crispy Sepang Kilangu / Taro Fry
